1. Purpose
1.1. This procedure outlines English language proficiency requirements for Adelaide University Students to ensure they can successfully participate in their studies.
1.2. This procedure should be read in conjunction with the Admissions Policy.
2. Scope
2.1. This procedure applies to all domestic and international applicants for admission to Adelaide University’s Enabling Programs, undergraduate and postgraduate coursework programs, and research programs.
3. Procedure
3.1. English language Entry Requirements are program-specific, approved by Transitional Academic Board and published on program webpages.
3.2. The minimum English language requirement for entry to an Adelaide University undergraduate program is International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic: Overall 6.0 or an equivalent result in another Adelaide University approved English language test, achieved within the last two years.
3.3. Adelaide University will use an applicant’s most recently dated evidence as proof of English language proficiency unless otherwise specified by the published program requirements.
3.4. Applicants may demonstrate that they meet Adelaide University’s English language requirements by one of the following means, which are each subject to specific recency limitations.
3.4.1. A prescribed achievement level in an approved English language proficiency test.
3.4.2. Approved previous studies taught and assessed in English.
3.4.3. Completion of an English language preparatory program from an approved provider within one year prior to the applicant’s program commencement date, unless otherwise specified.
3.4.4. At Adelaide University’s discretion, other forms of verified evidence of English-language proficiency may be considered, including previous work experience in an English-speaking professional environment.
3.5. Adelaide University may require an applicant to undertake an approved English language proficiency test to confirm that they meet English language requirements.
4. Definitions
4.1. An Enabling Program develops student skills and knowledge necessary for successful participation in university study.
4.2. Entry Requirements are the rules that specify the attainments, skills and knowledge an applicant must demonstrate to be eligible for consideration for admission to a program.
4.3. A Student is a person enrolled in an enabling program, award or non-award coursework study, a research program, or a short course or microcredential at Adelaide University.
