Global learning costs and funding

Funding your overseas adventure

Are you interested in an Adelaide University global learning program, but worried about the costs involved? You might be surprised to discover that undertaking an overseas program is more affordable than you think.

The cost of pursuing an international study experience can definitely add up, but you may not need to rely solely on your personal savings. There are several other sources of funding that you may be able to access, depending on your circumstances – explore the funding options listed, then check your eligibility and any deadlines or requirements carefully.

Even with funding options available, it makes sense to start saving as early as possible to ensure you get the most out of your global learning experience.

It's unlikely your visa will allow you to undertake paid employment while overseas. Some countries are also more expensive than others. It's a good idea to plan a budget appropriate to the country and city where you plan to study. If you are on a tight budget, choose your destination with your budget in mind.

The Adelaide University Global Learning team can help you to understand what costs to expect, how to prepare your budget, and the funding options available to help make your dream a reality.

Grants and scholarships

There are a range of funding options you may be able to access to help fund your global learning program.

OS-HELP is an Australian Government loan that assists eligible students enrolled in a Commonwealth supported place to study overseas on an exchange program, study tour, or other programs for credit or recognition.

In 2025, eligible students may borrow up to $8,245 (non-Asian countries) or $9,893 (for study in Asia) for a six-month period overseas. An additional $1,314 is available if you are undertaking Asian language study in preparation for study in Asia. These amounts are adjusted annually.

You will not be able to receive a supplementary amount if your Asian language study is part of a course for which you are receiving Commonwealth assistance for the tuition cost. In other words, you cannot be gaining credit from the Asian language study towards any programs currently funded through HECS-HELP.

Students can receive only one OS-HELP loan per six-month period, and up to only two OS-HELP loans over their lifetime. Your OS-HELP is added to your accumulated HECS-HELP debt. OS-HELP loans are subject to the availability of funding.

For more information about OS-HELP, including general eligibility, please visit the Australian Government's OS-HELP webpage.

Applications must be submitted to Adelaide University before you leave for your overseas study. More information on OS-HELP processes at Adelaide University, including how to apply, will be available later in 2025.

The New Colombo Plan (NCP) is a signature initiative of the Australian Government that aims to lift knowledge in Australia of the Indo-Pacific by supporting Australian undergraduates to study and undertake internships in the region. The New Colombo Plan usually involves an individual scholarship program for study of up to one year, language training, and internships or mentorships, as well as a university-managed, flexible mobility program for both short and longer-term study, internships, practicums and research.

New Colombo Plan Scholarship

Individual students are able to apply to access significant funding to support a period of study, language training and internship and/or mentorship in the Asia-Pacific. In previous years this has been for a period of up to 19 months, with a maximum total grant amount of $107,000.

If you currently receive payments from Centrelink, you may be able to continue receiving payments while you are undertaking your global learning program. You must notify Centrelink that you will be studying overseas and submit the required paperwork. Visit the Services Australia website for tailored information about how travelling outside of Australia may affect you. You can also contact Centrelink directly for advice around payments.

Costs and budgeting

There are several aspects to consider when planning and managing your finances for an overseas adventure, from budgeting to the cost of living in your chosen destination.

The cost of an overseas experience will vary significantly depending on location, duration, and your personal lifestyle. If you are participating in a study tour or other short-term program, some or all your major expenses may be covered in the program fee. If you are participating in a longer or more independent program, you will need to do some research into the costs you should expect. Many host institutions provide information on their websites that mention basic costs for students studying on exchange.

Please note that some programs will require payment in advance, and some exchange partners require proof of funds before you can be accepted into their program. It’s important to start investigating these things early.

You might like to think through the following:

  • How expensive is your destination(s)?

  • How long is your global learning program?

  • What kind of accommodation would you be comfortable staying in?

  • Will you include personal travel before or after your program?

  • How far out from your departure date will you book flights?

Remember to keep an eye on the currency exchange rate, as costs will vary depending on the strength of the Australian dollar. You can also make use of online currency conversion tools to help with your budget.

Some costs to consider include:

  • airfare (round-trip)

  • accommodation

  • meals and dining

  • local transportation

  • health and travel insurance

  • entertainment costs.

The Global Learning team has created a budget worksheet to assist you with your planning and budget calculations.

You’ll also need to think about how you’re going to access your money while overseas. We recommend discussing your banking arrangements and the options with your bank or financial institution, as international transaction fees can be expensive.

If you’re travelling on a long-term program, it might be preferable to open a local bank account, which may require additional paperwork. On a short-term program, a prepaid travel money card can save you fees and protect you from currency fluctuations.
