How can I support my child to prepare for university?

Last Modified: 13/Jul/2024

Supporting your child in considering their post-school options is both an exciting and daunting experience. There are so many degree options available which can lead to an even larger range of career pathways.

As university is a self-directed learning environment and requires a level of autonomy, it’s important to understand what interests your child. Finding a degree which aligns with their interests, passions and career goals will support their success at university and beyond.

When considering which program they’d like to study, encourage your child to explore the subjects that they’ll be studying within the program and what the potential career outcomes are to ensure they align with their interests and goals. Check whether the program has any prerequisite or assumed knowledge subjects.

While our best advice is to preference programs according to passion, it is a good idea to consider ‘back up’ options, particularly if the degree your child is aiming for is highly competitive. When applying to university through South Australian Tertiary Admissions Centre (SATAC), there is the opportunity to list up to six preferences.

It is important for your child to list their preferred program option first. For the remaining five preferences, encourage your child to take advantage of these by considering alternative programs that interest them, or even foundation programs as an alternative pathway to their dream degree.

As Adelaide University is currently working to establish the admissions process for prospective domestic students, you can refer to existing information available through the University of Adelaide and/or University of South Australia as a guide for planning senior school subject selections.
