Short-term programs

Short-term programs

Make the most of your holidays

Short-term programs are a great way to go overseas, earn credit towards your degree, and see the world in your semester breaks.

Short-term programs can be anywhere from two to eight weeks long, and generally take place in the June-July or December-January breaks. A short-term program is usually worth the equivalent of one course at Adelaide University, but other arrangements may also be in place. Each short-term experience type has its own requirements and processes.

Adelaide University aims to have a variety of short-term global learning programs available to students. Programs and processes are still being developed in some areas, and more specific information will be added to the website as it becomes available.

Program types

While there is generally a lot of variety in short-term programs, they can broadly be classified into two main program types: short-term exchange and short-term study abroad.

Short-term exchange

Short-term exchange involves studying at an exchange partner for less than a regular semester, usually a summer or winter school program. In these programs you are enrolled into an Adelaide University exchange shell course and receive credit towards your Adelaide University degree.

Short-term exchange is a great way to improve your language skills, experience another university, meet students from across the globe, and see the world! Consider this option if you want to study at an overseas university but are unable to commit to a full semester.

Tuition fees

Participating in a short-term exchange program means you pay your tuition to Adelaide University, not to the host university. Some partners may have a separate program fee that you’ll need to pay directly to them, so it’s a good idea to check this when considering your options.

Visit the Global learning costs and funding webpage for more information on costs and financial assistance.

Short-term study abroad

Short-term study abroad programs are study or practical experiences that also run in the June-July or December-January breaks, but are not part of an exchange agreement. This means you’re not enrolled in an Adelaide University course, and you pay all fees directly to the host institution or provider. Generally, if approved, credit will be applied to your Adelaide University degree upon your return – once evidence of successful completion of the program has been provided and any other requirements have been met.

After being approved by Adelaide University, you may apply directly to the overseas university, or the third party provider who is facilitating the program. Programs offered by third party providers often include additional support services, which you may like to consider when comparing programs.

Some of our exchange partners also offer short-term programs that are not part of our exchange agreement. In this case, these are promoted as short-term study abroad experiences and you will follow study abroad processes and fee requirements.

Tuition fees

Tuition and program fees are paid upfront to the institution or provider, and not to Adelaide University. It is important you confirm with the host university what is included in these fees and when payments are due. It is strongly recommended you do not to make any payments until you have received the necessary approvals from Adelaide University.

While we can provide guidance, it is your responsibility to familiarise yourself with and fully understand the terms and conditions of the programs and support services offered by host institutions and/or providers. Make sure you feel confident that you understand aspects such as:

  • payment terms

  • cancellation fees

  • insurance

  • how your personal information will be collected, used and stored.

Short-term program eligibility

Specific eligibility requirements for short-term programs will be available in MyGlobal – please visit the specific program page. Before you apply for any short-term program, please read through the information carefully to make sure you meet the general criteria to participate.

Each specific provider and/or program may have additional entry requirements. Your Adelaide University College may also have specific requirements.

Also remember that program eligibility may be different to funding eligibility. Visit the Global learning costs and funding webpage to find out more.

Get started

Each short-term program has its own specific application process and deadlines. Browse through each program's page in MyGlobal for specific information.

Timelines vary for individual programs. As a guide, application deadlines for short-term programs generally align with the following dates:

  • Mid-year programs (June—July): deadline of February or March the same year

  • Early-year programs (Dec—Feb):  deadline of September or October the previous year.

The information below is a general guide to help you to prepare your application and ensure you have the best chance of success. Please note that programs and processes are still in development in some areas, and more specific information will be added to the website as it becomes available.

  1. Explore your options: Start by researching the different global learning programs to find one that aligns with your academic and personal goals. Reach out and chat to us if you don’t know where to start.
  2. Check your eligibility: Refer to each program page for eligibility criteria.
  3. Consider your study plan: How might a short-term exchange program fit into your degree? No specific credit approval is needed just yet - but have a think about where you are up to in your degree, how many courses you have remaining, and how many electives you may have.
  4. Apply to Adelaide University: Apply before the program deadline. Refer to the program page in MyGlobal for further information.
  5. Get approval: We will guide you through this. This includes initial approval from the Global Learning team, and then, if relevant, credit pre-approval, which we can help facilitate.
  6. Apply to the host institution or provider: and any pay relevant fees. We recommend you don’t do this until you’ve received the relevant approvals from Adelaide University.
  7. Complete pre-departure tasks: We will communicate the required tasks with you, which are likely to include sending us evidence of ‘host acceptance’ and completing short-term pre-departure training.
  8. Go abroad! Have an incredible and enriching learning abroad experience and make sure to complete any post program requirements when you return.

Find your chosen program in MyGlobal and follow the instructions provided. Make sure you read all information carefully and pay attention to any advertised deadlines. You can only apply for one short-term program at a time, so please make your selection carefully. Please do not create multiple applications.

If you’re interested in studying at an overseas university or provider that is not currently listed in our available programs, please contact us and we can talk through your options with you. We recommend you explore Global Learning recommended programs in the first instance.

Please note that for all student travel there will be requirements under the Adelaide University Travel Policy that must be met.
