Entry requirements

Admission criteria

To be eligible, an applicant must have achieved at least one of the following minimum entry requirements and demonstrate they fulfill any prerequisite and essential criteria for admission. In cases where there are more eligible applicants than available places, admission will be competitive with ranks based on the entry criteria.  

A completed bachelor (AQF level 7) or bachelor honours (AQF level 8) degree or equivalent from a recognised higher education institution; OR 

A completed nested or related graduate certificate (AQF level 8) or higher or equivalent from a recognised higher education institution. 

This degree requires a Grade Point Average (GPA) equivalent to an Adelaide University 4.0 on a 7-point scale for entry.* 

 Additional requirements 

Applicants must submit a portfolio of work, curriculum vitae and a written statement of intent. 

Portfolio of work  

A digital portfolio of up to 15 images of works. List all images with name, title, date, medium and dimensions 

Curriculum Vitae (CV)  

Include your drawing software experience and career achievements, with particular emphasis on those relevant to your proposed program of study. 

Statement of Intent  

Outline your overall career objectives for undertaking the proposed program of study, together with a summary of your specific aims for developing your creative and professional skills.  Make sure you identify your chosen discipline area.  This statement must be 500 words or less.

English language entry requirements

In addition, international students who speak English as an additional language must have obtained one of the following standards within the last two years prior to admission. Possession of one or more of these qualifications, in addition to the academic entry requirements, does not, in itself, guarantee a place at Adelaide University. Applications are considered on an individual basis and selection is competitive. Where previous study/work experience was conducted in English, the application must be accompanied by certified documentation from the educational institution/employer certifying that the language of instruction/employment was English.

Fine art has the power to evoke emotions, spark conversations and influence cultural narratives. In our Graduate Diploma in Design specialising in Fine Arts you’ll focus on creative thinking.  

Develop skills in creating art, effective communication, managing projects and conducting research. Work collaboratively on high impact projects that enhance your portfolio – preparing you for work in professional team settings. Learn in studio-based environments as you develop practical skills and advance your visual art and creative knowledge. You’ll also complete an internship to cement what you’ve learned in an industry environment. 

Graduate after one year of full-time study or the part-time equivalent – or continue your learning with our Master of Design.

Use historical, cultural, and theoretical knowledge to inform art and design decisions. Understand aboriginal knowledges, skills and values through the lens of Country. Nurture your understanding of ecological issues in art and design to create culturally sensitive, inclusive, and sustainable solutions. 

Build a strong skillset to construct a project brief that defines the client’s and users’ needs. Work collaboratively in a team to develop art and design solutions that meet the brief and reflect the best of contemporary creative practice with real-time feedback on your projects. 

Explore and develop your creative ideas in our 24/7 studio. It's been carefully designed to support learning, encourage innovation, and help you grow your skills as an artist. The studio is equipped with audio-visual and IT tools to aid presentations, teamwork, and collaboration. 

You’ll also learn the essential skills to succeed in your career: strong communication, project management, financial, and legal skills.

Study hours

Your courses will require a combination of different learning formats, including lectures, tutorials, workshops, seminars and practicals. Aside from your classes, you’ll also need to allocate additional time for independent study. This may include assignments, readings, projects and contributing to online discussion forums. As a rough guide, full-time studies may require 12-26 hours of class time and 14-18 hours of independent study per week.
