Entry requirements

Admission criteria

To be eligible, an applicant must have achieved the following minimum entry requirements and demonstrate they fulfil any prerequisite and essential criteria for admission. In cases where there are more eligible applicants than available places, admission will be competitive with ranks based on the entry criteria.

  • Hold a confirmed training position within a suitable breast imaging department that will be supervised by an accredited medical sonographer who is registered with the Australian Sonographer Accreditation Registry (ASAR). This program requires completion of a logbook with supervised ultrasound experience for Breast Sonography. Applicants are responsible for organising their own training position in an ultrasound department in order to acquire the scanning experience;

PLUS at least one of the following:

  • A completed bachelor (AQF level 7) degree or higher from a recognised higher education institution in one of the approved Fields of Education; OR
  • A completed Graduate Certificate in Medical Sonography Principles and Theory; OR
  • Hold current registration with the Medical Radiation Practice Board of Australia (or overseas equivalent, where accreditation was awarded following completion of a recognised degree).

What you'll learn

At Adelaide University, you’ll deepen your knowledge, sharpen your skills, and master the essentials of this specialised field. 

Courses will cover all the important areas of breast imaging. In Professional Issues for Sonographers, you'll learn about the ethical and professional standards in sonography. Ultrasound Physics and Instrumentation teaches you how ultrasound technology works, so you understand the science behind the images. Mammography focuses on breast imaging techniques used to find problems early. Breast Sonography gives you the skills to perform and read breast ultrasounds. 

Your studies will include a mix of practical, professional, and research-based learning, with different types of assessments to help you succeed.  

Complete written assignments and quizzes, and work on case studies to deepen your understanding of breast imaging. You’ll learn from experienced professionals through online discussion forums and virtual classrooms. These interactive classes offer a unique chance to connect with clinicians who are leaders in the field. During your studies, you'll complete a logbook of breast ultrasound exams under the guidance of practising clinicians. This hands-on experience is crucial for building your skills and preparing you for a career in breast imaging. The logbook will track your progress, highlighting your ability to perform ultrasounds to the highest standards. 

You’ll graduate with a well-rounded education to prepare you for a rewarding career in breast imaging. 

This degree can be studied mostly online, however it may also have some on-campus and/or in-person requirements you will need to complete for accreditation purposes. This may include in-person intensive classes, workshops or professional placements.

Study hours
