With Adelaide University’s Bachelor of Science majoring in Microbiology and Immunology, you’ll tackle big questions about tiny things. How do bacteria, viruses and parasites develop and spread? How does our body defend against these microscopic invaders? And importantly – how can we develop new treatments to prevent and combat these diseases?

From medicine and public health to agriculture, food safety, waste management, and even crime scene investigations, this is a fascinating field with countless applications. Graduate as an adaptable scientist, ready to innovate and solve real-world challenges.

program overview

Overview

Studying science offers profound insights into the world – and your place within it. Majoring in microbiology and immunology, you’ll examine the fascinating world of molecules, genes and cells. Find out how these tiny building blocks contribute to the evolution of human life. Explore the biology of bacteria, viruses and parasites, and understand how our bodies respond to these pathogens. Discover how human immunity works and what happens when it is compromised.

Learn from experts and build your skills in practical lab-based experiences. With over 180 hours of lab practicals, you’ll develop advanced skills in microbiology, immunology and molecular science to complement your broader analytical and scientific expertise.

Let your curiosity guide you as you apply scientific research to real-world challenges, ready to make an impact across a range of industries locally and globally.

What you'll learn

The Bachelor of Science is a flexible three-year degree that offers a strong foundation across the science disciplines. Common core science courses broaden your knowledge, expanding your career prospects and developing industry-relevant skills. You’ll study scientific data handling, discover analytical approaches to problem solving, and gain evidence-based decision-making skills. You can also tailor the degree to your interests with the choice of one or two majors.

Majoring in Microbiology and Immunology, you’ll dive into biology, chemistry, microbiology, immunology and virology, infection and immunity. You’ll explore molecules, genes and cells and see how they relate to the evolution of human life. Discover the biology of microbes and bacteria, and examine what happens when microbial pathogens interact with their environments and hosts. Learn how our bodies deal with pathogens and what happens when our immunity is compromised.

Put the theory you’ve learned into practise with real laboratory practicals. Across second and third year, you’ll complete more than 180 hours of laboratory-based Work Integrated Learning that will advance your skills in microbiology, immunology and molecular and biomedical science.

Broaden your studies with elective courses from across the science spectrum, or opt for a second major.
