Why Bachelor of Science (Honours)?

Passionate about working with animals? Eager to understand them better?

Step into the fascinating world of animal psychology, where you'll uncover the hidden stories behind the behaviours and personalities of animals. Explore animal cognition and how reptiles, amphibians, mammals, fish and birds communicate emotion.

With our specialised honours degree, you’ll contribute significantly to animal welfare and conservation.

program overview

Overview

Turn your fascination with animals into a career where every day revolves around understanding their world.

In our Bachelor of Science (Honours) majoring in Animal Behaviour, you’ll be equipped to do just that. Uncover how genetics, environment and evolution shape animal behaviour – through research projects, an internship and case studies.

How do bees communicate? Why do octopuses solve puzzles? If you’re passionate about animals our degree offers a fulfilling career path where you can make a meaningful difference in animal lives and ecosystems.

After graduating you might track animal populations and combat habitat destruction, train animals for health checks, or coach parrots for educational shows. Perhaps you’ll teach kids why wolves howl or use therapy animals to help people heal.

Your honours year will give you a competitive edge in the job market and serves an important foundation in further postgraduate studies.

What you'll learn

Explore the biological roots of animal behaviour – from evolutionary drivers to developmental milestones – and channel your curiosity into hands-on research projects and real-world case studies. You’ll master cutting-edge strategies for humane animal management, welfare and behavioural care, empowering you to make a tangible impact in fields like conservation, research or animal advocacy.

Let your passion for the animal kingdom steer your learning journey as you build expertise in understanding and supporting creatures great and small.

With 120 hours of placements, you’ll build and apply your animal behaviour, research and personal skills in a workplace setting.

You’ll study a range of courses as part of your animal behaviour major, including cross-discipline core science subjects and electives.

Your fourth and final honours year will consist of a focused animal behaviour project and associated theoretical work. You’ll broaden your skill base and open the door to increased job opportunities. An honours year is also an important step for further postgraduate study.
