Entry requirements
Admission criteria
To be eligible, an applicant must have achieved at least one of the following minimum entry requirements and demonstrate they fulfil any prerequisite and essential criteria for admission. In cases where there are more eligible applicants than available places, admission will be competitive with ranks based on the entry criteria.
Secondary education (Year 12)
- Completion of a secondary education qualification equivalent to the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE).
Higher education study
- Successful completion of at least 6 months full-time study (or equivalent part-time) in a higher education award program in an undergraduate diploma (AQF level 5) or higher.
English language entry requirements
In addition, international students who speak English as an additional language must have obtained one of the following standards within the last two years prior to admission. Possession of one or more of these qualifications, in addition to the academic entry requirements, does not, in itself, guarantee a place at Adelaide University. Applications are considered on an individual basis and selection is competitive. Why Bachelor of Laws (Honours), Bachelor of Economics?
Analyse, navigate and influence the systems and structures that make modern Australia.
Laws are our governance – they set the standard for what behaviours we accept and how we deal with injustices. Economic markets are equally powered by this system, influencing the behaviours of individual consumers and governments alike.
Studying laws and economics will equip you with skills and confidence to tackle big picture thinking, large-scale policies and concepts. Whether you aspire to a career in the public, private or not-for-profit sector – the versatile skillset gained through this double degree opens the door to a number of rewarding careers where you can make a real impact.
Graduate as an informed, influential, analytical and ethical professional ready to make a difference.

Overview
Adelaide University’s Bachelor of Laws (Honours), Bachelor of Economics will guide you through the legal systems that govern us and the economies we live within – and equip you with the practical and analytical skills to work effectively within both. Develop a strong foundation in how the law works across the eleven key areas of Australia’s legal system, as well as how they apply into different real-world contexts.
Meanwhile, your economics studies will prepare you to tackle complex problems impacting government policy through to individual households. Study concepts like microeconomics, macroeconomics and econometrics, and develop the critical analysis skills and reasoning to influence policies and drive data-driven solutions.
Both degrees include hands-on learning, including over 100 hours of professional development in a real industry setting or project.
You’ll graduate empowered to work as an ethical, informed legal professional and advocate*.
*To be admitted to legal practice, you will also need to fulfil the practical requirements for admission, which includes the completion of the Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice.
Key features
Streamline your studies in two complementary topics and graduate with two degrees in five years.
Build the professional knowledge and skills to work in Australia’s legal and economic systems.
Engage with hands-on learning in our moot court room, legal clinics and placement opportunities.
Learn how to use industry-standard programming data and statistics modelling software.
Develop your skills in reasoning and argument and become a persuasive communicator.
Learn skills to support complex and ethical decision-making applicable to individual casework and large-scale policy development.
What you'll learn
The Bachelor of Laws (Honours), Bachelor of Economics is a five-year, full-time double degree.
Develop the skills to become a forward-thinking, well-rounded legal practitioner within the Australian legal system. Bolster your knowledge through your understanding of local and global economic systems which are empowered and changed through laws.
Begin by studying the foundational concepts of Australian law. Learn how legal institutions are set up and the basic methods to interpret laws and legal documents. You’ll also get your first taste for how laws operate in other contexts, including in business and economic environments.
Then, build upon these principles with a broad understanding of legal areas across the Priestley 11 – the civil and criminal topics required to become a solicitor or barrister in Australia. The kinds of topics studied could include:
- Administrative law
- Civil procedure
- Company law
- Contracts
- Criminal law and procedure
- Equity and trusts
- Evidence
- Federal and state constitutional law
- Professional conduct
- Property
- Torts.
For your economics component, you’ll begin by learning essential economic concepts and theories and develop your first practical skills in data analysis.
You will then branch into applied areas of data analytics and microeconomics, macroeconomics and econometrics. You’ll also develop global perspectives and understandings of how economic policy is designed, implemented, and evaluated.
Build practical skills relevant to your future practice all throughout your studies. Learn to draft court documents, how to advocate clearly and compassionately for clients, and how to navigate digital landscapes. Ask questions, conduct enquiries, and refine your ability to meet complex and contemporary issues. You’ll also develop understanding for community-centred practice, including from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives.
You’ll also be able to take part in community projects, clinical legal education, internships, study tours and mooting. Through the economics degree, you’ll engage with career development.
With a well-rounded and logical skill set, you’ll graduate with a distinct way of thinking that considers large-scale perspectives and long-term impact.
