Entry requirements
Admission criteria
To be eligible, an applicant must have achieved at least one of the following minimum entry requirements and demonstrate they fulfil any prerequisite and essential criteria for admission. In cases where there are more eligible applicants than available places, admission will be competitive with ranks based on the entry criteria.
Secondary education (Year 12)
- Completion of a secondary education qualification equivalent to the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE).
Vocational Education and Training (VET)
- Completion of an award from a registered training organisation (RTO) at Certificate IV (AQF level 4) or higher.
Higher education study
- Successful completion of at least 6 months full-time study (or equivalent part-time) in a higher education award program.
Work and life experience
- Completion of an Adelaide University approved enabling, pathway or bridging program; OR
- A competitive result in the Skills for Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT); OR
- Qualify for special entry.

Overview
The Bachelor of Journalism at Adelaide University gives you the expertise to tell impactful stories across multiple media platforms.
You’ll develop skills in news gathering, writing and multimedia production. You will learn how to record and edit audio and video content, write for online audiences and create immersive journalism using the latest technologies. Sharpen your critical analysis skills and develop your own long-form journalism project. Learn to navigate ethical challenges in journalism and understand its significance in shaping public understanding.
Hands-on experience is a cornerstone of this program. You’ll engage in real-world projects like creating a news segment which will provide you with industry skills. Graduate prepared for diverse range of careers including as a reporter, feature writer, podcaster or media analyst.

What you'll learn
In the Bachelor of Journalism at Adelaide University, you'll gain the essential skills and knowledge needed for a dynamic career in journalism.
Across three years, you’ll develop a foundation and advanced skills in news gathering, writing and storytelling.
In your first year, core courses will introduce you to the principles of journalism and multimedia journalism.
You'll study topics like:
- Foundations of journalism and news writing
- Basics of audio and video editing
- Essential skills in multimedia reporting and presentation.
As you progress into the second year, you'll build on these skills and knowledge with a focus on practical application.
Courses will include:
- Feature Writing
- TV and Video Journalism
- Media law and ethics.
You’ll be prepared to report on the ethical, legal and political issues affecting the industry and/or specialise in an area such as social justice, arts or science.
By your third year, you’ll be ready to create your own long-form journalism projects. Apply critical thinking and research skills in real-world scenarios. Then hone your skills further with courses like constructive and investigative journalism.
Your studies will culminate with a major project or internship in the final year, allowing you to apply everything you've learned in a practical setting. This hands-on experience will prepare you to thrive in the rapidly evolving field of journalism, across media and multiple platforms.
