Why Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) (Honours)?

Mechanical engineers are critical to the success of a mining project. They help design, maintain and optimise the machinery that’s essential to each stage of a mining operation.

If you’re a great problem solver, love fixing things, thrive on a challenge, and are passionate about industries transitioning to more environmentally sustainable processes – a career in mining engineering is a great fit.

Our Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) (Honours) majoring in Mining Engineering will give you the practical skills you need to extract valuable minerals, metals and energy resources from the earth in efficient, safe and environmentally sustainable ways.

program overview

Overview

Our Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) (Honours) majoring in Mining Engineering offers a solid foundation in the essential knowledge, principles, and technical skills required for a successful career in mechanical engineering.

Core courses explore key aspects of mechanical design, including mechanics, fluid mechanics, dynamics, vibration, control systems and thermodynamics.

With your mining engineering major, you’ll develop expertise in mining systems, safety management, resource estimation, feasibility studies and more.

Across the program, you’ll undertake practical learning experiences to refine your technical and professional skillset. These will include practical workshops, design projects and up to 450 hours of industry placements. You’ll graduate with the comprehensive knowledge and skills to excel as a qualified mechanical engineer.

What you'll learn

The first year of this program has been designed to give you a comprehensive introduction to general engineering principles and skills. This means that, no matter what you’ve studied in the past, you’ll develop a solid grounding to support your future engineering studies.

In your second year, you’ll start to take mining engineering-focused courses. You’ll explore courses across a range of mining engineering topics, opening your eyes to how mechanical engineering is applied in mining operations. Courses include:

  • Process engineering
  • Mineral resources
  • Mining systems
  • Mine safety engineering
  • Resource estimation and mine planning
  • Mine design and feasibility study
  • Mining and environment.

This is a highly hands-on degree, designed to prepare you for your career. You’ll undertake:

  • Collaborative design-and-build group projects, tackling complex problems alongside peers.
  • Up to 450 hours of industry work experience under the guidance of a qualified engineer.
  • A significant industry research project.

Across the program, assessments will include reports, case studies, presentations, essays and assignments, online quizzes, examinations, industry-relevant research projects, lab/practical team-based projects, e-portfolios and reflective practice.

You’ll be able to complete majority of first year common courses and second year courses at either our Adelaide City or Mawson Lakes Campus with some potential cross-campus study required. Throughout your degree, you’ll gain access to cutting-edge facilities across both campus locations to enhance your overall learning experience.
