Course overview
This course is designed to equip students with foundational knowledge, practical skills, and hands-on training in a simulated workplace environment, preparing them to excel as Veterinary Technologists in both clinical veterinary settings.
Throughout the course, students will delve into the basics of veterinary dentistry, learning how to perform essential preventative dental health procedures and maintain oral health in animals. They will gain a solid understanding of radiology, including the principles of diagnostic imaging, correct anatomical and directional terminology, and the safe operation of various imaging technologies. The surgical nursing component covers all stages of patient care, including pre-operative preparation, peri-operative assistance, and post-operative recovery, emphasising proper techniques, instrumentation, and infection control measures.
Students will also develop their professional communication skills, learning how to effectively interact with veterinary teams, clients, and patients. By the end of the course, students will be competent to work in surgical veterinary settings, applying their knowledge and skills to support high-quality veterinary care.
Course learning outcomes
- Safely perform diagnostic imaging techniques by using correct anatomical and directional terminology, and applying appropriate restraint, positioning, and modalities for various species.
- Apply knowledge of efficient and effective surgical theatre operations, surgical and dental terminology, identification and care of instruments, and infection control in a veterinary surgical setting.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of various nursing interventions in pre-, peri- and post-operative surgical cases considering patient outcomes.
- Explain appropriate dental prophylaxis treatment and recommendations, including the evaluation of veterinary dental care plans, and demonstrate the use of dental equipment and correct terminology.
- Demonstrate appropriate clinical and professional skills of a veterinary technologist working as part of a veterinary team.
