Course overview

Surveys are central to understanding society and making effective, efficient and fair decisions. In this course students build upon the statistical modelling skills developed in previous years to specifically consider planning and analysis of different challenges faced in survey data. Students will gain skills in statistical tools specific to surveys including sample design, imputation techniques, development of weights, weighted analysis and model-based alternatives. This course will contribute to the program objectives of developing specialist knowledge and applying that knowledge to problems that arise in business and society.

Course learning outcomes

  • Design survey weights for simple and complex survey designs with appropriately referenced documentation
  • Justify use of imputation strategy for different types of variables and missingness assumptions, with a particular focus of benefits and limitations
  • Estimate variance using appropriate techniques for simple and complex survey designs
  • Develop documentation that describes to stakeholders how to use weights appropriately in analysis
  • Evaluate the ethical challenges and considerations when working in survey inference
  • Critically review similarities and differences between weighted and model-based approaches in different survey designs
