Course overview
This course will develop knowledge of the concepts associated with assessment and treatment of hearing and its disorders across the lifespan. Disorders of hearing as a function of the time of onset (prenatal, perinatal, postnatal). The measurement of hearing (pure-tone audiometry, air conduction, bone conduction). Speech audiometry, measurements made with speech audiometers and nonbehavioral measures. Types of hearing loss and implications. Introduction to audiologic rehabilitation including amplification devices and other aids including cochlear implants. Therapy approaches for persons with hearing impairment.
Course learning outcomes
- Explain the different disorders of hearing based on time of onset, the associated types of hearing loss and therapy approaches for persons with hearing impairment
- Conduct and interpret measurements of hearing including screening pure tone audiometry
- Discuss ear health and hearing loss among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities
- Describe the implications of hearing disorders using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF)
- Outline the field of audiologic rehabilitation and its devices
- Describe current practices using Hearing Assistive Technology (HAT) for Hearing Disorders and their management
