Course overview
In this course, students will develop knowledge of the neuroanatomical subsystems of speech production and the disorders that affect it and apply evidenced based principles to speech pathology assessment and management of motor speech disorders Apply foundation knowledge of the neuroanatomy and neurophysiology to acquired motor speech disorders and the practice of Speech Pathology. Critical evaluation of the evidence base for assessment and intervention for motor speech disorders. Case based learning approach for application to clinical setting.
Course learning outcomes
- Identify and describe the anatomy, structure and function of the brain and nervous system relevant to motor speech disorders.
- Apply knowledge of anatomy and neuroscience to explain the etiology and neuroanatomical correlates to motor speech disorders.
- Identify the nature, prognosis and course of motor speech disorders, including dysarthria and apraxia of speech.
- Formulate evidence based assessment for motor speech disorders.
- Synthesise assessment data and client factors to plan evidence based management for motor speech disorders.
