Course overview
This course will develop students' competencies in the application of theoretical knowledge, evidence-based practice and legal obligations to the interpretation and reporting of assessment data, planning therapy goals and intervention for children and adolescents with Developmental Language Disorder and Specific Learning Disorders (Dyslexia), including bilingual, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients. Develop students' competencies in the application of theoretical knowledge, evidence-based practice and legal obligations to the interpretation and reporting of assessment data, planning therapy goals and intervention for children and adolescents with Developmental Language Disorder and Specific Learning Disorders (Dyslexia). Pre-literacy skills are also emphasised i.e. phonological awareness acquisition and intervention. Working with clients from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients will be a feature. Aspects of consent, confidentiality, legal documentation, record-keeping and mandatory reporting are addressed. The process of evaluating the effectiveness of intervention is also introduced.
Course learning outcomes
- Integrate assessment data on the language skills of a paediatric client.
- Plan and document a management program for children with developmental communication disorders and delayed literacy skill acquisition, from a culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) background.
- Evaluate treatment approaches and strategies for children with developmental communication disorders and Specific Learning Disorder (Dyslexia).
