Course overview

This course will provide students with the knowledge and skills that can be applied in a sport organisation. Key elements of the commercial operations area will be covered, including understanding the strategies corporate organisations are undertaking when partnering a sport organisation and the planning process a sport organisation undertakes in maximising its revenue generating capacity. Inherent in examining these elements is teaching students strategic commercial operations decisions of both sport and corporate organisations. Students will gain an understanding of the methods used to identify and attract sources of revenue including the formulation of sponsorship proposals and the strategies used in the sales management process. Sport sponsorship; merchandising in sport; sport fundraising; club membership; grant applications; corporate partnerships; community based partnerships; marketing and sport sponsorship strategies; sales management process including negotiation skills; sport marketing.

Course learning outcomes

  • Identify the importance of sales and networking skills in organisations and for future career prospects.
  • Evaluate previous developed sport management skills by developing business development techniques and tools relevant to future employment contexts.
  • Independently assess strategy needs of an organisation and provide a sport sponsorship solution based on a detailed analysis of a specific sport organisation.
  • Demonstrate critical thinking skills in solving complex and dynamic sport organisation commercial operations problems.
  • Develop commercial operations decision making skills and knowledge which will improve business acumen required for employment.
  • Demonstrate Business Enterprise Skills in the context of the Sport and Recreation Management discipline: i) Self-Management (advanced level); ii) Problem Solving (advanced level); iii) Written Communication (advanced level); and iv) International Perspective (advanced level).
