Course overview

In this course, students will develop an understanding of the principles of good governance and ethical practice within sport and recreation organisations. It examines the environment and structure of sport in Australia and public policy approaches. Principles of transparency and accountability in sporting organisations; ethics in sport; the sport environment; nature and role of governance in sport; best practice in sport organisations; governance structures in Australian sport; sport policy development.

Course learning outcomes

  • Distinguish the characteristics of good governance and ethical practice.
  • Critique the issues facing sport managers in governance of sporting organisations.
  • Apply principles of transparency and accountability in sport governance.
  • Apply theories of best practice in sport governance.
  • Demonstrate Business Enterprise Skills in the context of the Sport and Recreation Management discipline: i) Ethical Awareness (intermediate level); and ii) International Perspective (intermediate level).
