Course overview

The Management Practicum assists students in developing a practical appreciation of their particular field of study within a work environment and assists them in linking concepts covered in their program to a work setting. Students are expected to engage with the organisation in either organisational management or program-based roles. A field placement project carried out within a company or other organisation under academic and industry supervision. A requirement of the placement is the production of a comprehensive report and presentation. Student and supervisor evaluations, including personal critical reflection for the student, are also a critical component of the course.

Course learning outcomes

  • Link academic research techniques, practices and discipline to the practical needs of industry.
  • Formulate, implement and explain objectives for a field placement which directly links academic learning with industry needs.
  • Develop personal objectives which increase skills and competencies through research, observation, discussion and practice in a practical setting.
  • Develop skills and competencies which will assist in securing and recording suitable field placements.
  • Reflect upon the process and significance of personal orientation.
  • Identify potential problems that adversely affect organisations, including the significance of work group culture; and understand the role of sound research methods and practices in devising solutions.
  • Demonstrate Business Enterprise Skills in the context of the Sport and Recreation Management discipline: i) Self Management (intermediate level) ; ii) Problem Solving (intermediate level); iii) Teamwork (intermediate level); iv) Written Communication (intermediate level); and v) Oral Communication (intermediate level).
