Course overview

This course is designed to introduce students to the concepts behind leisure in modern Australian society. The class will approach these issues from the personal point of view in an attempt to understand how each person's leisure behaviour is shaped the way it is. Defining leisure; how leisure patterns are shaped by society; leisure in contemporary Australian society; the benefits of leisure; leisure and stress; optimal arousal and flow; self-esteem and leisure; leisure and play; the dark side of leisure and the politics behind leisure.

Course learning outcomes

  • Have examined and developed definitions of leisure.
  • Analyse the major conditions affecting leisure attitudes and recreation choice.
  • Identify the political nature of leisure in society.
  • Examine the historical development of leisure in western society.
  • Apply principles of leisure theory to their own lives.
  • Explain the social psychological underpinnings of leisure in contemporary society.
  • Demonstrate Business Enterprise Skills in the context of the Sport and Recreation Management discipline: i) Self-Management (foundation level); ii) Written Communication (foundation level); and iii) International Perspective (foundation level).
