Course overview

Gender and sexuality are encountered in every aspect of our lives. They inform public debate, popular culture and legislation, and influence our experiences of work, health, relationships and recreation. They shape our exposure to risk and violence, and our experiences of identity and pleasure. This course introduces students to key ideas in gender and sexuality studies, explores historical and contemporary debates, and focuses on intersections between gender, sexuality and diverse forms of difference in Australian and international contexts. Throughout the course, students develop crucial knowledge and critical thinking skills enabling them to contribute to a diverse world.

Course learning outcomes

  • Investigate issues and debates around gender and sexuality, particularly in relation to Australian society and culture
  • Identify and explain the significance of gender and sexuality in our everyday lives, including through their intersections with diverse forms of difference (e.g. class, ethnicity, education, age, religion, culture, citizenship and dis/abilities)
  • Discuss and apply the ways in which systems of power, privilege, oppression and resistance are linked to gender and sexuality and shape our experiences as individuals and members of communities
  • Develop a critical vocabulary that includes key theoretical debates in historical and contemporary gender and sexuality studies
  • Demonstrate research literacy, through library searches, research techniques and skills, development of argument, and academic referencing
  • Write logical and coherent arguments based on evidence, and engage in critical debate
  • Work with others in the exploration of ideas and to collectively develop arguments and negotiate solutions to problems
