Course overview
In this course, students will advance their understanding of how space has developed as a site of cultural life. Students will also further develop their knowledge of identities as situated in place and in historical, political, cultural, social and visual contexts. Students will critically examine topics such as cultural myths, virtual communities, consumerism, small towns, environment, trauma and the body to understand how spaces and places shape identities and cultural ways of life. Students will draw on historical and contemporary field work to understand the development of the field of cultural geography and to apply its tools of research and analysis.

- identify developed cultural and conceptual readings of place locally and globally
- critically analyse representations and meanings produced about place in specific cultural sites
- demonstrate advanced understanding of place by developing a case study of a selected place
