Course overview

The aim of this course is to introduce students to psychological concepts and practices found in counselling, psychotherapy, and human relationships. In this course students will be introduced to counselling/psychotherapy theories, concepts and issues, will develop communication skills embedded in a counselling context, and will develop an understanding of psychological concepts related to interpersonal perception and learning. Students will also be provided with an overview of different behavioural and cognitive approaches to counselling examples of counselling theory applied to contemporary social and cultural phenomena.

Course learning outcomes

  • Identify the salient concepts and values which help define contemporary counselling
  • Develop an understanding of the role of theory in counselling practice
  • Develop an understanding of counselling practice in both the international and Australian context:
  • Develop the skills to critically evaluate the strengths and limitations of each theory studied
  • Apply the principles of each theory to students' own life and experience
