Course overview

The aim of this course is to equip students with the theoretical foundation and empirical knowledge to understand the dynamics and driving forces of demographic changes (e.g. fertility, mortality, migration), and understand their vital implications for policy and planning. This course addresses significant population issues and policy challenges facing the world, with a focus on Australia and the Asia-Pacific region.

Course learning outcomes

  • Provide a fundamental knowledge in understanding differing changes in scale, composition, characteristics, and distribution of the world’s populations
  • Develop insights into building links between population and migration studies into policies and related programs
  • Engage with foundational theories and concepts relating population and migration trends and patterns
  • Synthesise and evaluate population related information in oral and written forms
  • Work effectively to create outputs involving individual and group participation
  • Understand global population dynamics and driving forces of demographic change with a focus on Australia and the Asia-Pacific region
