Course overview
The aim of this course is to further develop theoretical and practical skills in Geospatial Science while focusing on designing, creating, publishing and evaluation of user-centric or purpose-oriented interactive web mapping applications. This course is designed for students to enhance their acquired knowledge to analyse and communicate geospatial information effectively and efficiently through a web browser. Students will gain skills in internet map creation, cartographic web map design, and communication with online maps. Ultimately, this course aims to develop the ability to apply theoretical knowledge to practical problems and to create and communicate insight into complex spatial data which aligns with key demands in scientific careers, equipping graduates to address real-world challenges effectively and to excel in various scientific sectors.
Course learning outcomes
- Apply knowledge of cartographic design principles for interactive web maps and mapping applications
- Demonstrate proficiency in geographic data preparation for web-based rendering
- Apply web-based spatial analysis for real-time geographic information gathering
- Design and create effective and readable interactive web maps and mapping applications to communicate insight into discipline specific data and topics
- Conceptualize and conduct user, usage and usability test to evaluate web mapping products
- Communicate the process of Web mapping in oral, written and digital format and then critically reflect upon the process to further professional development
