Course overview
This course aims to enable students to critically explore human behaviour as it relates to conservation and barriers to environmentally responsibly behaviours.Using a psychological perspective, students will evaluate strategies to facilitate behaviour change in support of conservation of the natural environment.
Course learning outcomes
- Demonstrate a basic understanding of psychological principles of advertising and persuasion, the principles of behaviour change, and the ethical issues related to applications of these principles
- Analyse current marketing materials and conservation issues to determine how the application of psychological principles is used to impact human behaviours
- Reflect on how our thinking affects conservation how our thinking affects perspectives and behaviours related to conservation in a range of ways (eg. volunteering, place attachment, nature connection, eco-anxiety)
- Critically evaluate current research in an area of conservation, identifying a threat or problem relevant to conservation of a species or environment that may be addressed through ethical human behaviour change
- Design a conservation strategy centred on a specific human behaviour that demonstrates understanding in persuasive communication, psychological principles, and community based social marketing
