Course overview
The aim of this course is to execute a piece of research with some independence and to disseminate the findings of the research to an audience within and outside of the discipline of the research topic. Students will undertake and complete a research project which may be either quantitative or qualitative. Specific training and education within appropriate approaches relevant to the research project will be developed through consultation, discussion, problem-solving and liaison with more experienced researchers.
Course learning outcomes
- Demonstrate health literacy skills by accessing, critically reviewing and synthesising literature relevant to the research project
- Provide evidence of communication skills in scientific writing, which presents a clear and coherent exposition of the advantages and disadvantages of the student's chosen research methodology
- Exhibit oral communication skills through a clear and coherent presentation of the student's study methodology and results to a diverse audience
- Responsibly and accountably apply the principles of quality control to data collection (reliability, validity, trustworthiness, credibility, generalisability)
- Provide evidence for data management and analysis as well as appropriate justification of the analysis for the research project with some independence
- Critically reflect on the results, including limitations and the contribution to developing new understandings in the area of the student's research.
