Course overview
In this course you will explore contemporary Aboriginal public health practice to work reciprocally for the advancement of health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, families and communities, and to apply cultural safety to public health practice.
Course learning outcomes
- Articulate the importance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander concepts of health and wellbeing, including the influence of culture, family and connection to Country
- Describe the role of appropriate communication for culturally safe health practice and how this links to health outcomes
- Analyse the role of allyship, relationality, and truth telling in relation to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health professionals, organisations and communities in delivering culturally safe health care with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients
- Develop strategies for delivering a culturally safe health programs or services with respect to the individual, cultural and linguistic diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients
- Discuss strengths and challenges in delivering health programs and services in practice with respect to the social and cultural determinants of health
- Continuously reflect on the limitations of one’s own perspectives for delivering culturally safe health services and programs with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients
