Course overview
This course aims to equip students with advanced psychological knowledge of theories of aetiology and the course of psychological disorders in the context of physical health. Building on introductory knowledge and skills in psychological disorders, including common psychological disorders for diverse clients across the lifespan, students will gain enhanced knowledge that will enable them to recognise, assess, diagnose and formulate psychological disorders in adults in the context of physical health.
Course learning outcomes
- Demonstrate advanced knowledge in biopsychosocial approaches to health and illness in adulthood, including the relationships between physical, psychological and social determinants of health
- Demonstrate advanced knowledge in theories of aetiology, progression and recovery from psychological disorders associated with health issues in adulthood
- Demonstrate advanced knowledge in theories of adjustment and psychological approaches to adherence to treatment for chronic health problems in adulthood
- Demonstrate advanced knowledge in the selection and tailoring of assessment methods for mental health and risk factors in the context of physical illness to enable culturally responsive case formulation
- Demonstrate advanced knowledge in the selection and implementation of evidence-based culturally responsive interventions for physical health and wellbeing in adulthood
