Course overview
This course will equip students with advanced psychological knowledge of theories of aetiology and the course of complex psychological disorders during childhood. Building on introductory knowledge and skills in psychological disorders, including common psychological disorders for diverse clients across the lifespan, students will gain enhanced knowledge that will enable them to recognise, assess, diagnose and formulate psychological disorders in children and adolescents.
Course learning outcomes
- Demonstrate knowledge of incidence, prevalence, predisposing risk, protective and maintenance factors of psychological disorders usually presenting in childhood and adolescence
- Critically evaluate theories of the development and maintenance of psychological disorders in childhood and adolescence
- Identify severe, complex and chronic psychological disorders in childhood and adolescence using a relevant international taxonomy
- Demonstrate knowledge of the role and efficacy of pharmacotherapy in the treatment of severe, complex and chronic psychological disorders in childhood and adolescence
- Design comprehensive treatment and/or management plans for children and adolescents with psychological disorders
