Course overview

This course will provide students with theoretical and practical training in evidence-based approaches for the formulation, conceptualisation, treatment planning and application of treatments, for presentations of mild to moderate severity in a diverse range of clinical, health and organisational settings. This course complements the course Cognitive Behaviour Therapy in Professional Psychology Practice. It extends that course by focussing on Third Wave CBT approaches, such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, as well as developing competency in Motivational Interviewing. The course requires practical skill development.

Course learning outcomes

  • Articulate the role of a therapist and the effect of personal characteristics on a person's ability to be an effective therapist
  • Demonstrate knowledge about how to work effectively with professionals from other health disciplines
  • Identify some common intervention approaches and synthesise and apply knowledge of contemporary intervention approaches in a culturally responsive way
  • Identify the relevant information from an intake interview needed to produce a case report
  • Formulate a preliminary diagnosis and intervention strategy from a case study
