Course overview
This course will further develop students' understanding of theoretical and empirical underpinnings of assessment and intervention strategies for applying psychological knowledge in a broad range of professional careers. Students will further develop their knowledge of psychological therapy (including person-centred therapy, behavioural and cognitive-behavioural therapies, and integrative psychotherapies) and will apply psychological knowledge to working within organisations and with people from diverse cultural groups, such as Aboriginal communities and older adults.
Course learning outcomes
- Describe and critically analyse the theoretical and conceptual foundations underlying a number of psychotherapy approaches
- Demonstrate appropriate interpersonal communication and interview skills in situations appropriate to psychological practice and research
- Distinguish the processes and techniques of several psychotherapy approaches
- Critically evaluate the strengths and limitations of various psychotherapy approaches, including implications for therapy in multicultural contexts
- Describe the relevance of individual personal, family and social influences for choice of psychotherapy approaches.
