Course overview
The aim of this course is to further develop students' understanding of the neural underpinnings of cognition and behaviour and to provide practical laboratory based experience of the application of this knowledge. In this course students will further develop their knowledge of contemporary cognitive neuroscience (including the human nervous system, neural physiology, imaging techniques, the visual system, sensory processing and perception, the motor system, attention and executive function, memory, language, emotion and social cognition, states of consciousness, child brain and cognitive development, and aging). Students will also develop research and laboratory skills and will apply these skills in the preparation of a research report.
Course learning outcomes
- Identify the neural basis of various processes, basic neural anatomy and nervous system physiology, and methods used to image neural function and structure
- Recognise developmental changes in neural structure and function in relation to observed cognitive and behavioural patterns
- Identify the underlying changes in neural function during altered states of consciousness and abnormalities
- Apply laboratory and reporting skills and techniques relevant to the cognitive neurosciences
