Course overview

This course allows students to explore an advanced topic in cognitive neuroscience. Language is a powerful and complex communication system and one of our most fascinating abilities. Students will develop a deeper and critical understanding of the anatomical, physiological and functional aspects of neural language processing, language learning and associated disorders. This will highlight the challenges associated with studying the biological basis of higher cognitive abilities, which lack clear animal models. This course fosters the ability to apply the theoretical and methodological skills developed in Years 1 and 2 to a specific topic by generating testable theoretical predictions.

  • Demonstrate advanced knowledge of the neural basis of language
  • Demonstrate an advanced understanding of the advantages and limitations of theories and models in cognitive neuroscience
  • Generate predictions from alternative theories
  • Suggest appropriate methodologies to test the generated predictions
