Course overview

Building on the research skills acquired in the core psychology sequence, this course introduces students to more in-depth and specialised data science skills tailored to the unique needs of cognitive neuroscience data. Students will analyse an EEG data set collected in Insights into Cognitive Neuroscience using contemporary open-source computational tools. They will learn both the rationale behind the analysis steps undertaken and the coding skills required to implement them, with an emphasis on reproducible analysis techniques and open science principles. The skills acquired here lay the foundations for more advanced cognitive neuroscience-related analyses in Advanced Cognitive Neuroscience: Lifespan (Year 3).

Course learning outcomes

  • Explain the basic analysis steps underlying event-related potential (ERPs) analyses
  • Demonstrate the ability to implement an ERP analysis pipeline in an open-source programming language
  • Demonstrate the ability to appropriately report and visualise EEG/ERP data for publication purposes and to extract data for statistical analysis
  • Understand the principle of reproducibility as applied to a cognitive-neuroscience-related data analysis workflow
