Course overview

The aim of this course is to introduce students to psychological concepts and practices underpinning counselling, psychotherapy, and human relationships. This course introduces ethical codes, cultural competence, and foundational rapport building skills. This content prepares students with the foundational knowledge required for the development and application of counselling skills in future courses. This course aligns with the program’s intent to equip students with an understanding of ethical and cultural considerations and to practice reflexivity in relation to counselling. 

Course learning outcomes

  • Identify and apply the ethical theories, codes of ethics, and legislation relevant to counselling and psychotherapy
  • Recognise and critically reflect on a range of ethical issues, and ethical dilemmas in contemporary counselling practice
  • Describe information shared at the commencement of counselling to establish an ethical therapeutic relationship
  • Demonstrate an understanding of their own culture, lived experiences, and personal characteristics in relation to the practice of counselling within a historical, sociocultural and geopolitical context
