To extend students' abilities to analyse and critically appraise the interplay of economics and politics in global capitalism, contemporary world economy, and international relations.
Course learning outcomes
- Critically analyse the main theories of international capitalism and international development
- Identify and critically analyse dominant economic, political, and technological forces that have transformed international political economy since late 20th century
- Critically evaluate international political economies of trade, monetary, and financial relations, foreign direct investment, and development aid
- Appraise the role of relevant regional and international institutions/organisations in matters related to international trade, finance, and development
- Critically analyse governance issues in global political economy, identify winners and losers, and suggest alternative policies.
- Appraise the correlation between human capital and trade competitiveness, particularly in the contexts of innovation, technology, and knowledge management.
