Course overview

This course offers students the hands-on opportunity to engage in complex international negotiations and crisis decision making activities. Students will engage in a series of simulation exercises based on historical and contemporary international security challenges to help deepen their understanding of the practical application of key empirical concepts and analytical theories. These exercises will help students to develop their understanding of different motivations and challenges in international crises and to devise solutions from the perspective of key players.

Course learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of key International Security theories and their application to international negotiations and crisis decision-making
  • Demonstrate sophisticated understanding of key historical and contemporary global and regional security issues
  • Exhibit effective written and verbal communication skills to identify policy options, negotiate compromises, and resolve crises
  • Critically reflect on the factors that influence the foreign and security policies of different states
