Course overview

The course analyses the evolving threats to states and stability in Asia by considering traditional and non-traditional security challenges. Topics may include Australia's role in regional security dynamics across Asia; maritime security and territorial disputes; internal conflicts and insurgencies; climate change and environmental security; energy, food and water security; gender, inequality and human security; irregular migration and refugee crises; pandemics and health security; and transnational crimes and cybersecurity.

Course learning outcomes

  • Analyse traditional security threats in the Asian region, including military conflicts, territorial disputes, and historical tensions
  • Assess non-traditional security challenges, such as environmental issues, transnational crime and cybersecurity affecting Asia
  • Interrogate theoretical frameworks related to security dynamics in Asia, considering cultural, political, and economic factors
  • Critically reflect on regional security policies and strategies, considering the role of international organisations and cooperation
