Course overview

The aim of the course is to examine the architecture, policy and practice associated with the provision of humanitarian aid during emergencies. It does so by exposing students to a range of critical issues including the roles of food, health, water, sanitation, shelter, risk reduction, emergency aid provision, recovery and development. Using real-world examples and skills-building group work, the course is geared towards building student capacity to develop technically sound solutions to the challenges associated with complex emergencies.

Course learning outcomes

  • Build an in-depth knowledge of humanitarian emergencies;
  • Build practical experience of applying humanitarian emergency tools and methods to real-world problems;
  • Develop knowledge of humanitarian emergency sector organisation, policy and management processes;
  • Develop and apply critical thinking skills to humanitarian problems;
  • Develop skills in communication, collaborative enquiry and problem solving;
  • Foster an awareness of ethical, social, and cultural issues within a global context and their importance in the exercise of professional skills and responsibilities
