Course overview
The aim of the course is to introduce students to key concepts, debates and strategies in international development, the history and effectiveness of development policies and practices, and the range of multilateral, bilateral and non-governmental organizations that are currently engaged in the field of development. Through case-studies from very poor countries and a focus on the current international development framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the course looks at major development issues and challenges, such as poverty, security, gender and environmental sustainability.

Course learning outcomes
- Develop knowledge of, and developed insights into, key issues and concerns of development policy, practice and theory
- Describe the history of colonialism and its implications application for of key approaches to poverty, international inequalities and development
- Explain the key concepts, debates and approaches to international development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as its framework
- Develop the skills to work collaboratively in teams as well as individually in a learning and research environment
- Demonstrate an interest in and commitment to continuous learning and social scientific research in international development
