Course overview
The aim of the course is to introduce students to key concepts, debates and strategies in international development, the history and effectiveness of development policies and practices, and the range of multilateral, bilateral and non-governmental organizations that are currently engaged in the field of development. Through case-studies from very poor countries and a focus on the current international development framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the course looks at major development issues and challenges, such as poverty, security, gender and environmental sustainability.

Course learning outcomes
- Explain the key concepts, debates and approaches to international development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as its framework
- Identify the root causes and systemic factors contributing to global poverty and inequalities
- Critically evaluate the different agents, approaches and effectiveness of development policies and practices
- Analyse the context of poverty in very poor countries and propose solutions for poverty alleviation
- Collaboratively research, analyse and debate development and poverty issues in very poor countries
