Course overview
The aim of this course is to appraise and apply theoretical paradigms of foot function and related proximal structures and demonstrate these safely in practice settings. Pathology and pathomechanics of disorders of the foot and lower limb, including malalignments of structural and functional nature. Examination techniques. Sagittal plane disturbances. Affects of leg length discrepancies on gait and posture. Anatomy of and influence of and from proximal joints of the lower limb and back. Investigation and exploration of alternative paradigms of podiatric biomechanics.
Course learning outcomes
- Explain the theoretical basis for the safe biomechanical examination of the foot and lower limb in both walking and running.
- Discuss the application of in-shoe and external devices used in biomechanical control (theory and practice)
- Communicate peer-reviewed scientific literature regarding contemporary biomechanical paradigms in written and oral formats using appropriate language for a designated audience.
- Synthesise literature of biomechanical paradigms of foot function demonstrating application to proximal structures
- Safely apply biomechanical examination of the foot, leg and gait testing
