Course overview
In this course, students will develop clinical knowledge of commonly encountered health issues and their podiatry management in the Australian context and to introduce practice guidelines and regulatory frameworks relevant to podiatry clinical practice. This includes: chronic conditions including diabetes, arthritis; cardiovascular conditions, infectious conditions, respiratory conditions, common dermatological conditions, neurological conditions and mental health. Chronic disease self-management. Common Ageing. Academic and ethical integrity. Introduction to the Ottawa Charter, World Health Organisation categories of impairment activity and participation (ICF framework) and social and cultural determinants of health. Biopsychosocial practice, critical thinking and clinical reasoning.
Course learning outcomes
- Demonstrate a knowledge of medical pathologies relevant to podiatry practice
- Demonstrate an understanding of Academic and ethical integrity.

- Understand the principles of chronic disease management.
- Apply constructs of the Ottawa Charter, ICF framework and the World Health Organisation categories of impairment activity and participation, to effectively classify and interpret the impact of chronic disease or pathology.
- Identify and reflect on the social and cultural determinants of health.
