Course overview

The aim of this course is to integrate at an advanced level, knowledge and skills gained across the first three years of the program and to prepare students for their Professional Placement experience by further development of the communication, technical and cognitive skills necessary for competent, safe and effective pharmacy practice at a level expected of an entry level pharmacy practitioner. Further development of the legal and ethical dimensions of pharmacy practice; Simulated clinical scenarios for situations encountered in day-to-day practice (with consumers/clients, health professionals, and others ); problem-solving strategies to address the needs of complex clients/consumers; adapting communication to address challenging situations. Medication review and management; drug optimisation, therapeutic drug monitoring and chronic disease management. Delivery of core pharmacy services such as the controlled supply of prescription and non-prescription medicines including the manufacture of standard formulary and personalised extemporaneous formulations. Concise written communication to other health professionals.

Course learning outcomes

  • Effective delivery of contemporary professional practice in the wider context of the Australian health care system.
  • Apply knowledge and skills to demonstrate professional and ethical behaviour using relevant ethical frameworks according to the profession's code of ethics and national competency standards.
  • Demonstrate effective communication, cognitive and technical skills, including pharmacotherapeutic and pharmacokinetic knowledge to analyse, generate and implement solutions in demanding practice areas including complex therapeutic regimens and chronic disease management.
  • Apply the concepts of duty of care to the patient and the wider public and of the responsibility and professional conduct required of pharmacists
  • Apply the legal and ethical framework governing the profession and health-care delivery
