Course overview
The aim of this course is to develop knowledge and understanding of the global to local provision of medicines within a public health framework, provide students with an understanding of Australia's National Strategy for the Quality Use of Medicines and to develop knowledge and skills relevant to the quality use of medicines as related to pharmacy practice. Medical epidemiology; National Medicines Policy; industry marketing and life cycle management; regulation of pharmaceuticals including scheduling; Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme and Advisory Committee; pharmacovigilence; decision analysis; pharmacoeconomics; quantitative and qualitative research; ethical dimensions of research; translational research and using evidence to influence practice.
Course learning outcomes
- Calculate and interpret basic epidemiological and pharmacoeconomic values.
- Critically appraise and interpret medical (epidemiological, quantitative and qualitative) research.
- Analyse clinical decisions from the perspective of the associated evidence base.
- Explain the roles of the major stakeholders ( e.g. industry, government, professions, media, consumers) in the quality use of medicines.
- Evaluate factors that have, or will likely have, a major impact on the quality use of medicines, including translational research to practice.
