Course overview

The aim of this course is to understand the general principles of pharmacology including a drug's action and its application through modification of the pathophysiology of common disorders.
Principles of drug administration in practice.


An introduction to the principles of pharmacology including types of drug molecules, drug targets, pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics, mechanisms of toxicity and interactions


An overview of the most important drugs acting on the following body systems: circulatory, respiratory, endocrine, immune, peripheral and central nervous systems, and for the treatment of infection and cancer

Course learning outcomes

  • Describe the pharmacological principles of drug action
  • Describe the pathophysiology of common disorders, and describe the mechanism of action of the drug(s) used in these disorders
  • Explain how the mechanism of action is related to the beneficial and adverse effects of the drugs used to treat the disease states discussed in this course
  • Predict and describe the consequence of some basic drug interactions
