Course overview
The aim of this course is to gain an understanding of how drugs work on physiological systems and their use in management of selected disorders. An introduction to the principles of pharmacology and the management of selected disorders with drugs.
The aim of this course is topics covered in this course include: drug targets, basics of pharmacokinetics, peripheral nervous system pharmacology, respiratory disorders, cardiovascular conditions, inflammation and pain, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, gout, sedative and anxiolytic medications, drugs for spasticity, osteoporosis, diabetes, endocrine drugs, antimicrobials, epilepsy, depression, psychosis and bipolar disorder, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, cancer.
Course learning outcomes
- Describe the principles of pharmacological drug action.
- Describe the mechanism of action of the drugs used in the disease states discussed in this course.
- Explain how the mechanism of action is related to the beneficial and adverse effects of the drugs used to treat the disease states discussed in this course.
