Course overview
The aim of this course is to apply the specialised knowledge of a pharmacist in dosage form design, pharmacokinetics and pharmacology in the provision of pharmacy services. Development of knowledge and skills that relate to the Pharmacy practice context: development of cultural, social, behavioural and communication issues in pharmacy practice; development of clinical reasoning skills; Pharmacist only medicines; introduction to and development of medication history taking skills; dosage forms and administration, including administration devices; introduction to pathology testing including hand held devices.
Course learning outcomes
- Identify, prioritise and respond to drug-related problems through the integrated application of knowledge/skills from the areas of pharmacology, pathophysiology, dosage form design, pharmacokinetics and social pharmacy
- Demonstrate competent pharmacy service delivery skills, using appropriate reference sources to enable effective problem solving
- Apply knowledge of prescription and non-prescription pharmaceutical formulations, particularly relating to the management of common ailments treated by schedule 3 `pharmacist only' medicines.
- Demonstrate accuracy in calculations appropriate to pharmacy practice and explain the implications for professional responsibility
- Apply the principles of therapeutic decision making to optimize outcomes utilising patient factors such as age, weight, pregnancy and lactation and potential adverse drug events.
- Demonstrate the ability to adapt communication style to the environment to enable the safe and effective use of medicines
