Course overview
The aim of this course is to provide commencing students with the necessary numerical, ethical and academic writing skills and an introduction to appropriate professional behaviours, rights and responsibilities. Basic numeracy, arithmetic and algebraic skills underpinning laboratory and dosage calculations, SI units, powers and nomenclature, unit conversion, molarity and concentration units, dilution factors and data representation. Basics of bioethics and research ethics, introduction to indigenous cultural awareness. The role of empirical evidence in making decisions in health practice, understanding, questioning and evaluating evidence. Basics of professional behaviour and codes of conduct (including student codes), rights, responsibilities and consequences. Succinct academic writing.
Course learning outcomes
- Develop and consolidate appropriate numeracy, arithmetic and algebraic skills required for subsequent learning
- Acquire an informed basic knowledge of the principles of bioethics and research ethics and indigenous cultures
- Develop a basic appreciation of and be able to discriminate between different sources and types of evidence
- Develop an informed understanding of the essentials of professional behaviour, codes of conduct, rights and responsibilities.
- Develop and demonstrate academic writing skills
