Course overview
The aim of this course is to develop entry level competency in clinical reasoning and intervention for people experiencing neurological conditions to enable their occupational performance. Occupational impact associated with a range of neurological conditions including acquired brain injury, cerebral-vascular accident. Practice based evidence for neurological interventions. Negotiating targeted outcomes and developing action plans to address challenges to occupational performance, using different theoretical frameworks. Strategies and techniques to enable occupational performance relevant to different theoretical approaches and different stages of the client pathway. Approaches to teamwork commonly employed when working with people with neurological conditions, including the role and relationships of clients and carers in teamwork. Legislative, privacy, ethical and medico-legal aspects of practice including report writing. Principles and strategies for communicating with people experiencing communication difficulties.
Course learning outcomes
- Define and explain the theory, knowledge base and evidence for occupational therapy assessment and intervention for people with a range of neurological conditions.
- Apply practice based evidence to select and justify appropriate occupational therapy assessment and intervention.
- Apply clinical reasoning to appropriately prioritise client occupational performance issues to plan and evaluate a realistic intervention.
- Apply the clinical reasoning process to different audiences through written and verbal communication.
- Define and describe a range of neurological conditions and the impact on an individual¿s occupational performance.
